The Volkswagen Polo (Mk6/AW, 2018–Present) shares the VW Group convenience trick that lets you drop all four windows from the key fob — ideal for flushing out the heat on a sweltering day before you even open the door, or for winding the windows back up from a distance when you spot rain coming. Volkswagen calls it comfort opening and closing, and on the Polo it is frequently switched off from new, which is why most owners never realise their key can do it.
What comfort opening and closing does
Holding the unlock button on the remote rolls every window down together; holding lock winds them all back up. The windows move only while you keep the button pressed, so you can stop at any height by releasing. The Polo has no sunroof option, so this is purely a four-window function — but it still clears a stifling cabin in seconds.
How to open all the windows from the fob
- Stand within a couple of metres of the Polo.
- Press and hold the unlock (open padlock) button on the key.
- Keep holding — all four windows wind down.
- Release as soon as they reach the level you want.
How to close all the windows from the fob
- Stand next to the car within remote range.
- Press and hold the lock (closed padlock) button.
- All the windows wind up while you hold.
- Release once they are shut; the indicators flash to confirm locking.
If nothing happens — enabling the feature
On many Mk6 Polos the function is coded inactive from the factory, so holding the remote does nothing. There is no reliable on-screen toggle for it on the Polo; it is activated in the central convenience module with a VAG diagnostic tool. The OBDeleven “Comfort Windows” app is the most common way owners switch it on, enabling comfort opening and closing via the remote. A VAG specialist can do the same with VCDS in a few minutes.
Before blaming the coding, confirm the windows are calibrated: the remote feature only works if all four windows operate fully with one-touch auto up/down. If one has lost its memory after a flat battery, re-initialise it — hold the switch fully up until it stops, release, then hold up again briefly, and repeat down.
The door-lock fallback
The driver’s door has an emergency key barrel behind a cover on the handle. Pull the blade from the remote, remove the handle cap, insert the key and turn and hold toward unlock to drop the windows or toward lock to raise them. As with the buttons, the car must have the comfort function enabled in its coding for this to work.

Why doesn’t holding unlock do anything on my Polo Mk6?
The feature is almost certainly coded off from the factory. Activating it needs a VAG tool — the OBDeleven Comfort Windows app, or VCDS at a specialist — to enable comfort opening and closing in the convenience module.
Does the Polo have a sunroof that opens too?
No. The Mk6 Polo is not offered with an opening sunroof, so the comfort function controls the four windows only.
My key-fob windows suddenly stopped working — why?
Usually a window has lost its one-touch calibration, commonly after a 12V battery goes flat or is disconnected. Re-initialise each window with the switch (hold fully up, release, hold up again briefly) and the remote function returns.
Can I open just the front windows?
No — the Polo opens all four together. There is no factory split between front and rear windows on this model.
Is closing the windows remotely safe?
Only use it where you can see the car and no one is reaching into a window. The glass stops the instant you release the button, so stay within range and keep watching.
