The Audi A3 (8Y, 2020–Present) is push-button start across the range, and the newer flat keyless fob uses a slightly different dead-battery trick from the older A3. Instead of touching the steering column, you hold the dead fob flat against the START ENGINE STOP button itself, which has an inductive coil behind it to wake the transponder.
Start the A3 8Y with a dead fob
- Open the car with the emergency blade first (next section), then sit in the driver’s seat and close the door.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Hold the flat face of the fob directly against the START ENGINE STOP button on the centre console — the button contains the back-up reader coil on the 8Y.
- Keeping the fob pressed there, push the START button. The coil energises the chip and the engine fires.
If the dash shows “key not detected,” press the fob flat and squarely against the button and try once more — the inductive range is very short.
Unlock the A3 8Y with the emergency key blade
- On the fob, press or slide the release and pull the metal blade straight out.
- At the driver’s door handle, the lock barrel hides under a cap at the back or base of the handle. Insert the blade into the slot and pop the cap off.
- Insert the blade into the barrel and turn to unlock. The alarm may sound until you start the engine.
Why a dead fob still starts the car
The 8Y fob’s coin cell powers only the proximity broadcast and the remote-lock buttons. The chip that authorises the engine is a passive RFID transponder that takes its power inductively — on the 8Y, from a coil built into the START button. Because that chip never depends on the cell, holding the dead fob against the button gives the immobiliser everything it needs.
Replace the fob battery
The A3 8Y fob uses one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Slide out the emergency blade, then squeeze the release clips inside the key slot to draw the battery tray out — do not prise the slim casing. Fit the new cell + side up, slide the tray back in, and refit the blade. Keyless entry and remote locking return immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I hold the fob to the column or the button on an 8Y?
To the START button. Unlike the older A3 8V, the newer 8Y reads the dead fob through a coil behind the start button itself, not the steering column.
Does every A3 8Y have push-button start?
Yes — the 8Y range is push-button start, so the hold-against-the-button method is the standard recovery.
How do I open the fob without damaging it?
Don’t prise the casing. Pull the blade, then squeeze the clips inside the key slot to slide the battery tray straight out.
Why does the alarm go off when I use the blade?
The car treats a mechanical unlock as forced entry until it sees the transponder. The alarm silences as soon as the engine starts.
Screens dead too — still the fob?
Probably not. A black virtual cockpit and no response when you open the door points to a flat 12V battery, not the coin cell. A weak cell only affects the remote.
If a fault light remained after the no-start, decode it on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob rather than an immobiliser code.
