Disconnecting the 12 V battery on an Audi A3 Mk4 (8Y, 2020–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job. This guide covers safe disconnection and what the car needs re-taught afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, under a cover. Mild-hybrid (MHEV) petrol versions still use a conventional 12 V battery here — there’s no high-voltage system on the A3 to worry about.
Disconnecting
- Switch the ignition off, remove the key/keyless fob and wait a minute for the electronics to sleep.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and tuck the lead aside.
- If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then the clamp and cover.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last.
- Reset the clock; the MMI reloads on its own.
- Re-initialise the one-touch windows — see our A3 window guide.
- Stop/start may behave conservatively for a drive or two while the battery monitor relearns — normal.
A like-for-like battery doesn’t strictly need coding, but a different type or capacity should be registered to the battery-management system so the charging strategy matches — that step needs an OBD tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which terminal first on the A3?
The negative (−) first, and reconnect it last.
Does the Audi A3 battery need coding?
A matching replacement generally doesn’t; a different type/capacity should be registered with a diagnostic tool for correct charging.
Will I lose my MMI or radio?
No code is normally needed — just reset the clock; the MMI reloads.
Why won’t my windows auto-close now?
The power cut cleared their learned position. Run the quick re-initialise.
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our A3 Mk4 service reset.
