Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

These instructions apply to the Ford Mondeo Mk5 (CD391) 2014-2022.

The Ford Mondeo (Mk5, 2014–2022) uses an electronic parking brake on the rear axle, with a motor-on-caliper actuator at each rear wheel. Because there is no cable and no manually wound piston, a rear pad change begins by putting the EPB into service (maintenance) mode so the system retracts its own pistons before you touch the caliper.

What service mode is and why you need it

Each rear caliper carries a geared electric motor that drives the piston in and out. With the system live the motor holds the piston firm, so it can’t be compressed for thicker new pads. Service mode commands both motors to wind fully open and locks the EPB out so it can’t re-apply while you work. The message centre shows a maintenance-mode notice and keeps the amber brake lamp lit while it is active.

Entering EPB service mode on the Mondeo Mk5

Park on level ground and chock a front wheel. Keep off the brake pedal during the start sequence so the engine doesn’t fire. Then:

  1. Set the ignition to ON with the engine off.
  2. Press and hold the accelerator pedal fully down.
  3. Still holding the accelerator, push the EPB switch down to RELEASE and hold it.
  4. With both held, set the ignition OFF, then back ON within five seconds.
  5. Keep holding until the message centre reads Maintenance Mode and the EPB lamp lights, then turn the ignition OFF and release the pedal and switch.

The pistons are now retracted and the EPB is locked out for the pad change.

Never force the pistons back by hand

Never wind or force the EPB pistons back with a G-clamp, a wind-back tool or by hand. The piston is driven by an electric motor and gearset; pushing it backwards mechanically shears the gears or burns out the motor, and the repair is a complete caliper. In maintenance mode the motor has already opened the piston, so the new pads should seat with light hand pressure only. A piston that still feels solid almost always means the car never entered maintenance mode — stop and confirm the dash message before forcing anything.

Exit and bed-in

With the pads fitted and wheels back on, exit with the reverse sequence: ignition ON, hold the accelerator, push the EPB switch UP to APPLY, cycle the ignition OFF then ON within five seconds, hold until the EPB performs a full apply-and-release, then release. That cycle sets the correct pad-to-disc air gap. Bed the pads in on the road with several firm slow-downs from about 30 mph (50 km/h), leaving cooling gaps, then confirm the parking brake holds the car on a slope.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Mk5 won’t enter maintenance mode — is that normal? It’s a known quirk on some Mondeo Mk5s: a number of cars simply won’t accept the manual accelerator-and-switch sequence no matter how carefully it’s done. If yours is one of them, use the FORScan fallback below rather than persisting.

How do I do it with FORScan? A cheap OBD adapter (around $50, e.g. an OBDLink EX) running FORScan has a dedicated “Enter electric parking brake maintenance mode” function. It retracts and locks the calipers reliably, then a matching exit function returns the EPB to normal — this is the dependable route when the button sequence won’t take.

Why does the manual sequence fail? Common causes are not holding the accelerator fully, exceeding the five-second ignition window, pulling the switch up instead of pressing it down, or not being on level ground in P. But some Mk5 units genuinely need the scan tool regardless.

Do I rotate the piston while compressing it? No — once retracted in service mode the piston pushes straight in; it does not screw in.

Is the EPB on every Mondeo Mk5? Yes — the Mk5 used the electronic parking brake across the range, including hatch, estate and Vignale, so this procedure applies to all of them.
