The Nissan Qashqai (J11, 2014–2021) hides an engineer-grade self-check inside the instrument cluster that any owner can trigger with nothing more than the trip-reset button and the ignition. Nissan calls it the combination meter self-diagnosis mode, and it is the quickest way to tell whether a lazy fuel gauge, a flickering warning lamp or a blank patch on the LCD is a real fault or just a quirk you can ignore. No scan tool, no garage visit.
What the self-diagnosis mode does
On the J11 the cluster pairs analogue speedometer and tachometer needles with a central dot-matrix LCD and a fuel and coolant-temperature gauge. The self-diagnosis routine exercises every one of those elements in turn so you can watch for anything that fails to respond:
- A full needle sweep — the speedometer, tachometer, fuel and coolant gauges all swing from zero to maximum and back so you can spot a sticking or dead pointer.
- All LCD segments and colour patterns light up, revealing dead pixels or missing blocks in the odometer and trip display.
- Every warning and indicator lamp driven by the cluster illuminates at once, regardless of the actual switch states, so a burnt-out telltale shows up immediately.
- The mode steps through internal error codes and shows live values such as battery voltage held by the meter.
How to enter the hidden mode
- Park, apply the handbrake and make sure the ignition is fully OFF.
- Press and hold the trip-reset button (the slim stalk button next to the cluster used to switch and zero Trip A/Trip B).
- While still holding it, turn the ignition ON (engine not running, or push the START button without your foot on the brake). Keep the button held for at least one second.
- Now press the trip-reset button at least three times within seven seconds of the ignition coming on.
The cluster drops into self-diagnosis: the LCD dots flash alternately, all odometer segments light, and the gauges drop to zero before sweeping.
Reading each stage
Each press of the trip-reset button advances to the next test stage. You will see the pointer sweep (the gauges travel 0→MAX twice — if any needle stays put, that gauge or the cluster is faulty), the full LCD-segment illumination, the all-lamps test, and a numeric stage that cycles through stored cluster fault codes and the measured battery voltage. Make a note of any code shown; you can pair it with a deeper diagnosis later.
How to exit
The mode only runs with the ignition ON and ends the moment you turn the ignition OFF. It also cancels itself automatically if you leave the trip-reset button untouched for about 20 seconds. Nothing is saved or changed — your odometer, trips and settings are untouched.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work on a Qashqai J11 with the digital-look TFT centre display? Yes. Mid- and late-J11 cars still use analogue needles either side of the LCD, and the trip-reset self-diagnosis routine drives both the needles and the LCD.
Will it clear my service light or stored engine codes? No. This is a display self-test only. It shows cluster-internal codes but does not read or erase engine, ABS or airbag faults — you need an OBD reader for those.
One of my needles did not sweep. What does that mean? A pointer that fails to move during the sweep points to a gauge motor or cluster-board fault, which usually means a cluster repair or replacement rather than a sensor issue.
I missed the seven-second window. Can I retry? Yes. Switch the ignition fully off, wait a moment, and repeat the hold-and-three-presses sequence. Timing the three presses promptly after switch-on is the part most people get wrong.
Is it safe to do repeatedly? Completely. The routine is read-only, writes nothing to memory and can be run as often as you like.
