The Audi Q2 (2016–Present) is a push-button-start crossover that uses the current Audi dead-fob method: the START ENGINE STOP button doubles as the back-up transponder reader. Press the flat fob against the button and its inductive coil wakes the chip, so the Q2 starts even when the coin cell is completely flat.
Start the Q2 with a dead fob
- Open the car with the emergency blade first (next section), then sit in the driver’s seat and close the door.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Hold the flat face of the fob directly against the START ENGINE STOP button on the console — the button contains the back-up reader coil.
- Keeping the fob pressed there, push the START button. The chip is energised and the engine fires.
If “key not detected” appears, press the fob flat and square against the button and try again — the inductive range is very short.
Unlock the Q2 with the emergency key blade
- On the fob, press or slide the release and pull the metal blade out.
- At the driver’s door handle, the lock barrel hides under a small cap. Pop the cap off with the blade or a fingernail.
- Insert the blade into the barrel and turn to unlock. The alarm may sound until the engine starts.
Why a dead fob still starts the Q2
The fob’s coin cell powers only the proximity broadcast and the remote-lock buttons. The chip that authorises the engine is a passive RFID transponder energised inductively by the coil behind the start button — not by the cell. So holding the dead fob against the button gives the immobiliser exactly what it needs to start the car.
Replace the fob battery
The Q2 fob uses one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Slide out the emergency blade, then squeeze the release clips inside the key slot to draw the battery tray straight out — do not prise the slim casing. Fit the new cell + side up, slide the tray back, and refit the blade. Keyless entry and remote locking return immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I hold the fob to the column or the button on a Q2?
To the START button. The Q2’s back-up reader is the coil behind the start button, the same as the rest of the current Audi range.
Does every Q2 have keyless start?
All Q2s use a push-button start, so the hold-against-the-button method is the standard recovery. Keyless proximity entry is a separate option, but the start procedure is the same.
How do I open the fob without damaging it?
Don’t prise the casing. Pull the blade, then squeeze the clips inside the key slot to slide the battery tray straight out.
Why does the alarm sound when I use the blade?
Mechanical entry looks like a break-in to the car until it reads the transponder. The alarm stops once the engine starts.
Could it be the 12V battery instead?
If the dash is dead and nothing wakes when you open the door, suspect the car’s 12V battery, not the coin cell. A weak cell only affects the remote.
If a fault light remained after the no-start, decode it on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob and not an immobiliser code.
