The Audi Q2 (2016–Present) compact crossover is built on the MQB platform and uses an electronic parking brake with motor-driven rear calipers, operated by a small (P) switch on the centre console. To change the rear pads you put the EPB into service mode with a scan tool so the rear actuators retract electronically. There is no owner button trick that opens the calipers on the Q2.
What Service Mode Is and Why You Need It
Each rear caliper carries an electric motor that screws a spindle onto the piston to clamp the pads for parking. Fresh pads are thicker, so the spindle has to be wound fully back first. Service mode commands both rear motors to retract so the piston can be pushed home by hand once the caliper is off the disc.
Use VCDS, OBDeleven, or a generic £20–40 OBD EPB/SAS tool with a VAG “lining change / brake pad change” routine. The OBD socket is in the driver’s footwell. The function lives under [53 — Parking Brake] → Basic Settings; some tools route it via the ABS (03) module — use the tool’s pad-change menu either way.
Retracting the Caliper
- Park level, ignition on, engine off, battery charger connected — the EPB module aborts on low voltage.
- Turn Auto Hold off and release the parking brake.
- Select Start lining change mode. The rear motors run and back the spindles off.
- Wait about 30 seconds after they stop, remove the caliper, and push the piston straight in by hand — no twisting.
Never Force the Pistons
Never clamp, wind or hand-force the rear pistons back on the Q2. The piston rides on the EPB motor’s spindle; forcing it strips the actuator gearbox or spindle thread and ruins the caliper. Service mode exists so the motor retracts the spindle electronically — only then does the piston push in, and only with light, straight hand pressure.
Exit and Bed-In
With new pads in and the caliper torqued, select End lining change mode. The motors re-clamp and take up clearance. Cycle the ignition, apply and release the EPB twice, and confirm the brake-warning light is out. Then bed in with several moderate stops from about 30–40 mph, cooling between them, before any hard braking.

Does the Audi Q2 have an electronic parking brake?
Yes — the Q2 uses the EPB with motor-operated rear calipers across the range, so a scan-tool service mode is required to change the rear pads.
Can I change the rear pads without a tool?
No. There is no manual release. A generic OBD EPB tool with a VAG pad-change routine is the minimum; a basic code reader won’t open the calipers.
My tool can’t find the EPB under module 53?
Some Q2 builds reach the routine through the ABS (03) module. Use the tool’s dedicated “brake pad replacement” menu, which selects the right path.
Is the SQ2 the same?
Yes — the SQ2 uses the same rear EPB motors and identical service-mode routine despite its larger brakes.
