Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on an Audi Q2 (GA, 2016–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up.
The service position — some owners call it the maintenance or winter position — is a mode that lifts both front wiper arms high off the windscreen so you can get behind them. You reach for it in two situations: when the rubber has started to smear and you want to renew the blades, and in cold weather, when standing the arms up overnight stops them freezing flat to the glass and tearing when you first switch them on. On the Q2 it is a deliberate feature, not a fault, and the arms will only stand up when you ask them to in the right way.
Why the Service Position Exists
Look at where the Q2 parks its wipers and the reason becomes obvious. At rest they drop down and tuck under the lip of the bonnet trim, which keeps them out of the airflow and hidden from view. That is fine for driving, but it means you cannot simply grab an arm and swing it up — the blade fouls the bonnet edge, and forcing it strains the wiper linkage and can chip or crack the plastic scuttle trim. The service position solves that by first sweeping the arms up to a clear, near-vertical rest point where nothing is in the way, so you can fold them off the glass without a fight.
Getting Ready
- Make sure the bonnet is fully shut — with it open the mode will not arm.
- Have the ignition in the right state (see the steps below); the timing matters.
- If the blades are frozen to the glass, free them gently first — lifting against ice can stall or strain the motor.
- Have the new blades to hand and the packaging open before you lift, so you are not leaving arms standing longer than needed.
- Work one arm at a time so you always have a hand controlling an arm that could spring back.
Raising the Wipers
- Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
- Switch the ignition on, then off.
- Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
- The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
- Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.
Some Q2s also list a wiper service position in the MMI car/service menu, which does the same job if you would rather use the screen than the stalk.
Putting Them Back
When you have finished, lay each arm back down flat against the screen — do not leave them standing. Then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once; they sweep and drop back into the parked position under the bonnet lip on their own. If they do not settle exactly at park, one more full wipe cycle usually seats them.
Won’t Lift?
- Too slow — the stalk only works for a few seconds after ignition-off; try the sequence again more promptly.
- Wrong ignition state — you need the on-then-off sequence, not the engine running.
- Bonnet ajar — latch it fully; a bonnet that is not quite shut blocks the mode.
- Blades frozen down — free them from the ice first, then retry.
- Wipers weren’t parked — let them return to their normal rest point before you start.
Changing the Blades
With the arms standing clear, support the arm with one hand so it cannot spring back onto the glass — a bare metal arm dropping onto the screen can crack it. Most Q2 blades use a common clip or hook fitting: release the catch, slide the old blade off, and click the new one on until it locks. Once the fresh blade is fitted, lower the arm gently by hand rather than letting it snap down. Fit both sides before you send the wipers back to park.
