On the Audi Q5 (FY/80A, 2017–present) the 12V battery is in the luggage compartment, under the boot floor — not the engine bay. Disconnecting it is straightforward; just follow the order and the after-steps below so nothing is left disabled.
How to Disconnect and Reconnect the Q5 (FY) Battery
- Note your infotainment security code if you have one, and take the key out of the car.
- Switch off all electrical consumers and turn the ignition off.
- Open the boot and lift out the luggage-compartment floor to reach the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (earth) terminal first, then the positive if required.
- Do your work. To reconnect, fit the positive first, then the negative, and tighten both.
- Switch the ignition on and let the car settle before starting.
Diesel (SCR / AdBlue) Note
On diesel Q5s with selective catalytic reduction, wait about 10 minutes after switching off before disconnecting, so the AdBlue system can finish purging. Follow any tool or manual prompt for your exact engine.
After Reconnecting
- Re-initialize the electric windows (close each, then hold the switch up briefly) or one-touch stays disabled.
- Re-enter the radio code if asked and reset the clock.
- Auto start-stop and some assistance features may need a short drive to re-learn.
Jump-Starting Instead
For a jump, don’t reach into the boot — use the dedicated jump-start terminals in the engine compartment (positive post under its cover, plus an earth point). It’s safer than clamping onto the boot battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on an Audi Q5 (FY)?
Under the luggage-compartment floor. Lift the boot floor to reach it; the jump-start posts are separate, in the engine bay.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light?
No — the service interval is stored in the modules and is unaffected. On the FY it needs a diagnostic tool to reset.
If a warning stays on after reconnecting, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
