The auto start-stop on the Audi Q5 (FY/80A, 2017–present) switches off with a single button, but it turns itself back on every time you restart the car. Here’s the button, why it resets, and how to make the change stick.
How to Turn Off Auto Start-Stop on an Audi Q5 (FY)
- With the engine running, find the A-OFF button (an “A” circled by an arrow) on the center console or dash.
- Press it once. The start-stop warning light in the cluster confirms the system is off.
- The engine will no longer shut down at a standstill until you restart the car.
Why It Comes Back On
By design, start-stop re-enables itself at every engine start, so you have to press the button again each drive. There is no owner menu setting that makes “off” permanent.
If you want it off by default, the usual route is a coding change with a VAG tool (for example OBDeleven’s one-time “App” or VCDS adaptation). That’s optional, reversible and separate from the dashboard button.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Q5 start-stop keep turning back on?
It resets to “on” at every start by design. The button is a per-drive toggle, not a permanent setting.
Can I disable it permanently?
Not from the car’s menus. A VAG coding tool (OBDeleven/VCDS) can set it to stay off, and the change is reversible.
Is it bad to switch start-stop off?
No — it simply keeps the engine running at stops. Many owners turn it off for smoother town driving; it does not harm the car.
