On the BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) the 12V battery lives in the luggage compartment (right-hand side, behind a trim panel) — not the engine bay. Disconnecting it is simple, but follow the order and after-steps below.
How to Disconnect and Reconnect the X5 (E70) Battery
- Note your radio code if you have one, switch everything off, and make sure the key is out (ignition OFF).
- Open the tailgate and remove the right-side luggage-compartment trim panel to reach the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (earth) terminal first, then the positive if required.
- Do your work. To reconnect, fit the positive first, then the negative, and tighten both.
- Switch the ignition on and let the car settle for a minute before starting.
After Reconnecting
- Re-set the clock — the CBS service clock stops while the battery is disconnected.
- Re-initialize the electric windows/sunroof if one-touch has stopped (close, then hold the switch up briefly).
- The tailgate, comfort features and some assistance systems may need a short drive to re-learn.
Jump-Starting Instead
For a jump, don’t open the boot panel — the X5 has a dedicated positive jump terminal in the engine compartment (right-hand side, under a cover) plus an engine earth point. Use those; it’s safer than reaching the boot battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a BMW X5 E70?
In the luggage compartment, on the right behind a trim panel. The jump-start posts are separate, in the engine bay on the right.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light?
No — CBS data is stored in the car and is unaffected. Use the trip-button CBS reset for the service light.
If a warning stays on after reconnecting, look the code up on autodtcs.com.
