Reset the Service Indicator

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk2 (E70) 2006-2013.

The BMW X5 (E70, 2006–2013) uses Condition Based Servicing (CBS), so you reset each service item from the dash with the trip button — no tools needed. Do the actual work first; a CBS item will only reset once it has dropped to 80% or less of its life.

How to Reset the Service Light on a BMW X5 (E70)

  1. With the car off, turn the ignition on: insert the key and turn to position 1, or on keyless cars press Start/Stop twice without touching the pedals.
  2. Press and hold the trip-reset button (end of the wiper/indicator stalk or next to the odometer) for about 10 seconds until the first service item appears.
  3. Press briefly to scroll through the service items (oil, brakes, inspection, etc.).
  4. On the item you want, press and hold for about 3 seconds — “Reset?” appears.
  5. Confirm the reset, then repeat for any other item you’ve serviced. Turn the ignition off when finished.

Good to Know

  • An item only resets if it’s at 80% or less of its remaining life — a nearly-new interval won’t reset.
  • The brakes item resets only if the brake-wear sensor is working.
  • Keep the on-board clock correct; disconnecting the battery stops the CBS clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the reset button on an X5 E70?

It’s the small trip/BC button — on the turn-signal/wiper stalk end or beside the odometer, depending on cluster. Hold it with the ignition on to enter CBS.

Why won’t the service item reset?

CBS blocks a reset until the item is at 80% or less of its life, so a freshly-reset or nearly-new item can’t be zeroed again. The brakes item also needs a healthy wear sensor.

Do I need a scan tool?

No — the standard oil and inspection CBS resets are done from the dash. A tool is only needed for coding or key programming.
