These instructions apply to the BMW X5 Mk3 (F15/F85) 2013-2019.

The BMW X5 (F15, 2013–2019) uses Condition Based Servicing (CBS), so you reset each service item from the dash with the trip button — no tools needed. Do the work first; a CBS item only resets once it’s at 90% or less of its life.
How to Reset the Service Light on a BMW X5 (F15)
- Close all the doors. Turn the ignition on: press Start/Stop twice without touching the pedals (don’t start the engine).
- Press and hold the trip-reset button on the cluster for about 10 seconds until the first service item appears.
- Press briefly to scroll through the items (Engine oil, Vehicle check, brakes, etc.).
- When “Reset executable” shows for the item you want, press and hold for about 3 seconds and confirm.
- Reset Engine oil before Vehicle check if both are due. Turn the ignition off when finished.
Good to Know
- An item only resets at 90% or less of its remaining life — a nearly-new interval won’t reset.
- The brakes item resets only if the brake-wear sensor is working.
- Keep the clock correct; disconnecting the battery stops the CBS clock.
- BMW’s own recommended method is the diagnostic tool, but the trip-button method above works for the owner oil and inspection resets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the reset button on an X5 F15?
It’s the small trip/BC button on the instrument cluster. Hold it with the ignition on (engine off) to enter the CBS menu.
Why won’t the service item reset?
CBS blocks a reset until the item is at 90% or less of its life, so a freshly-reset or nearly-new item can’t be zeroed. The brakes item also needs a healthy wear sensor.
Do I need a scan tool?
No for the standard oil/inspection resets — the trip button does it. A tool is only needed for coding or key programming.
