Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Equinox Mk2 2010-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2010–2017 Chevrolet Equinox you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment (it sits low, partly out of view).
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Reset the clock and radio presets.

FAQ

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

What battery does it take?

Match the replacement number on the original battery label; the owner manual doesn’t print a group or CCA figure.

Anything to relearn?

Just the clock and presets; the TPMS can be relearned separately if a warning appears.

If your Equinox stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
