Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Equinox Mk2 2010-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2010–2017 Chevrolet Equinox uses the GM Oil Life System and shows CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON when a service is due. After an oil and filter change you clear it from the Driver Information Center (DIC). This is the US-market procedure.

DIC button method

  1. Switch the ignition to ON/RUN with the engine off.
  2. Press the DIC MENU button to the Vehicle Information menu, then the arrows to REMAINING OIL LIFE.
  3. Press and hold SET/CLR until it reads 100%, then switch off.

Accelerator-pedal method

  1. Ignition ON/RUN, engine off.
  2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.

If CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON returns at the next start, repeat the reset.

FAQ

When should I reset it?

Only after an oil and filter change — and at least once a year. If you reset it by mistake, change the oil within 3,000 miles.

What oil does it take?

A dexos1 oil: 5W-30 on both the 2.4L four (5.0 qt) and the 3.6L V6 (6.0 qt).

The reset won’t hold.

Make sure the ignition is ON with the engine off and the REMAINING OIL LIFE screen is showing before you hold SET/CLR.

If your Equinox stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
