Program the HomeLink Buttons

The three buttons in your 300’s overhead console are a built-in HomeLink universal transmitter that can replace the clip-on remotes for your garage door, a community or driveway gate, and even the yard lights. On a car that’s meant to feel finished, having the openers built into the console rather than clipped to the visor is part of the appeal — and because the EVIC shows a “Channel Trained” prompt as you go, you can confirm each one worked without guessing. Set aside ten quiet minutes and keep your original remotes handy.

How you know it needs programming

Straight from the dealer the three buttons are blank, so pressing one simply does nothing. You’ll also be here after a household change — a new opener, a fresh gate fob from the HOA, or a second driver who wants the third button for their own garage. The tell-tale during training is the EVIC message: “Did Not Train” means the handshake failed, while “Channel X Transmit” confirms the button is now sending.

1. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons together. Keep holding until the EVIC shows “Channels Cleared” — roughly 20 seconds — then release. Do this once only, when you first set up the console.
2. Hold your hand-held garage remote 1 to 3 inches from the HomeLink buttons.
3. At the same time, press and hold both the HomeLink button you want to use and the button on your remote. Keep both held down.
4. When the EVIC reads “Channel X Trained”, release both buttons. If it shows “Did Not Train”, repeat steps 2 to 4.
5. Press and hold the newly trained button; “Channel X Transmit” confirms it is working.

Why a rolling-code opener needs an extra step

Most garage openers built after 1995 use a rolling security code (Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Genie Security+ among them) that changes with every press, so simply copying one signal isn’t enough — the console and the opener have to be introduced at the motor. After the button trains, press the learn or “smart” button on the opener’s motor head in the garage, then within 30 seconds press, hold and release the trained HomeLink button up to three times.

If it won’t train

• The single most common mistake is repeating step 1 to add a second device — holding both outer buttons erases every channel. To add a gate or a second door later, start at step 2 only.
• A weak remote battery gives a repeated “Did Not Train”; try a fresh cell and hold the remote a little closer or slightly farther away.
• If the button trains but the door still won’t move, you almost certainly have a rolling-code opener and skipped the motor-head learn step above.
• Older fixed-code openers (pre-1995) train on the first attempt and need no motor-head step at all.

Follow the instructions that came with your garage-door opener as well, never run the engine in a closed garage while you program, and stay well clear of the door in case it moves during training. Once trained, the console keeps your channels through a battery disconnect, so you should only ever do this once.
