A common surprise on the 2008-2023 Dodge Challenger: the 12 V battery isn’t under the hood — it’s in the trunk. Disconnect it negative-first, and note it’s a vented battery that must be replaced with the same type. This is the US-market procedure.
- Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
- Open the trunk of the coupe and lift the access cover over the battery.
- Loosen and remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
- Reconnect positive first, negative last. Do not disconnect the battery’s vent hose, and replace only with a vented battery of the same specification.
- Reset the clock and radio; some driver settings return on their own.
FAQ
Where is the battery on a Challenger?
In the trunk, under an access cover — not under the hood. The under-hood posts you see are remote terminals for jump-starting only.
What is the vent hose for?
It routes battery gases out of the trunk. Never disconnect it, and fit only a vented replacement battery — a sealed battery here is a safety hazard.
Which cable first?
Negative off first, negative on last.
The Challenger shares its LX platform, drivetrains and these procedures with the four-door Dodge Charger.
