Reset the “Check Gascap” Message

The Dodge Charger LX (2006–2010) often displays a “Check Gascap” message if the fuel system detects a pressure leak. This is part of the EVAP system, which prevents fuel vapors from escaping. In many cases, the warning is triggered by a loose or faulty fuel cap. Here’s how to fix and reset it.

Common Causes of the Check Gascap Message

• Loose or improperly tightened fuel cap
• Damaged or cracked cap seal
• Missing fuel cap
• After refueling, cap not clicked fully into place
• Less commonly: EVAP leak (hoses, purge valve, or canister)

How to Reset the Message

1. With the engine off, remove the fuel cap.
2. Inspect the rubber seal for cracks, dirt, or damage — clean if necessary.
3. Reinstall the cap and tighten it until it clicks 3 times.
4. Start the car and drive normally. The message should clear automatically after several trips if the cap is sealed properly.
5. If the message remains after 2–3 drive cycles, the cap may need replacement.

When to Replace the Fuel Cap

• If the seal is cracked, hardened, or missing
• If the cap no longer clicks into place
• If the message keeps returning even after tightening

Other Possible Issues
