Calibrate the Compass and Set the Variance Zone

The overhead compass in the Magnum keeps itself accurate while you drive, so a heading that suddenly shows “CAL” or points the wrong way usually follows a battery disconnect, roof work, or carrying magnetic cargo in the wagon’s load bay. Two quick jobs put it right: a manual calibration drive and a variance-zone number that aligns the compass with magnetic declination where you live. Everything runs from the console C/T button, with no tool needed.

How you know it needs doing

Watch for “CAL” in the compass window or a heading that’s plainly wrong — reading W while you drive east, for example. On the Magnum this often turns up after hauling tools, speaker magnets or metal cargo in the long rear load area close under the roof sensor, as well as after windshield replacement or a jump-start. If the compass follows your turns but sits a fixed amount off, the variance zone is set for the wrong region rather than the sensor being out of calibration.

Calibrate the compass

1. Turn the ignition to On.
2. Press and hold the C/T button for about 2 seconds.
3. Scroll to “MANUAL COMPASS CALIBRATION”.
4. Press FUNCTION SELECT to start; “CAL” appears in the display.
5. Drive one or two slow, complete circles on level ground, away from large metal objects and power lines, taking at least 16 seconds. “CAL” disappears once it calibrates.

Set the variance zone

1. Look up your zone number on the variance map for your region.
2. Turn the ignition On and press and hold C/T for about 2 seconds.
3. Scroll to “COMPASS VARIANCE”; it shows the current zone.
4. Press FUNCTION SELECT until your zone number is displayed.
5. Press C/T to exit, then confirm the headings now read correctly.

Why it drifts

The sensor reads the earth’s magnetic field through the roof steel, which can hold a residual charge after body repairs, jump-starts, or a load of magnetic cargo carried near the roofline — a real-world hazard on a wagon that a sedan rarely sees. Calibration re-learns the offset, while the variance setting corrects for the gap between true and magnetic north in your area. Run the circles in an open lot, away from other vehicles, rebar, buildings and overhead or underground power lines, or you’ll lock in a distorted reading.

If the display goes blank

An empty compass window that shows neither a heading nor “CAL” points to a magnetised roof rather than a lost calibration — on a wagon this frequently follows carrying tools or magnets in the cargo bay. Clearing it needs professional degaussing with a dedicated tool at a shop, so don’t keep re-driving circles. Keep the C/T button alone while moving and do the calibration at low speed on level ground clear of traffic. While any direction still shows, even a wrong one, the calibrate-and-variance steps above are the correct fix.
