Program the HomeLink Buttons

The Magnum wagon’s overhead console carries a three-button HomeLink transmitter, so you can raise the garage door without digging a clip-on remote out of the door pocket — genuinely useful when the tailgate is up, the cargo bay is loaded and your hands are full. Teach it your existing openers once and the EVIC confirms each channel as it learns. Have your original garage remote with you before you begin.

How you know it needs programming

From new the three buttons are empty and pressing one does nothing at all. You’ll typically come here when you first take delivery, after a used purchase (where clearing the old owner’s codes is the sensible first move), or when a new opener replaces a failed one. The EVIC is your guide: “Did Not Train” flags a failed attempt, and “Channel X Transmit” means the button is now sending its signal.

1. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons at once. Keep holding until the EVIC reads “Channels Cleared” — roughly 20 seconds — then let go. This clearing step is done only when you first set the buttons up.
2. Hold your hand-held opener remote 1 to 3 inches from the HomeLink buttons.
3. At the same moment, press and hold both the HomeLink button you want and the button on the remote, keeping both held.
4. When the EVIC shows “Channel X Trained”, release both. If it reads “Did Not Train”, run through steps 2 to 4 again.
5. Press and hold the trained button; “Channel X Transmit” tells you it is set.

Why post-1995 openers need a motor step

Openers built after 1995 almost all use a rolling code that shifts with every press, so the wagon can’t simply copy one signal — the two units must be paired at the opener itself. Press the learn or “smart” button on the opener’s motor head, then within 30 seconds press, hold and release the trained HomeLink button up to three times.

If a button won’t take

• To program a gate or a second door afterwards, return to step 2 only — repeating step 1 clears every channel you’ve already stored, the mistake that catches most people out.
• A low remote battery reads as a repeated “Did Not Train”; fit a fresh cell and adjust how close you hold the remote.
• Trained but the door doesn’t move? You have a rolling-code opener and still need the motor-head sync above.
• A pre-1995 fixed-code opener trains on the first try with no motor step needed.

Keep the engine off in an enclosed garage, follow the instructions supplied with your opener, and stay clear of the moving door while the console trains. Your trained channels are held in the console and won’t be lost if the battery is disconnected, so it’s a one-time job.
