Disable Start and Stop

These instructions apply to the Fiat Panda Mk3 (319) 2012-present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Your Fiat Panda (319, 2012–present) with Start&Stop shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel and cut emissions in town. When you’d rather keep it running — crawling traffic, a hot day, or before any under-bonnet work — one button switches it off. The A-in-a-circle light on the dash simply tells you the system is present and working; it is not a fault, and a car that stops at every set of lights is behaving exactly as designed.

How Start&Stop works on the Panda

When you halt and hold the brake (or, on a manual, slip into neutral and lift the clutch), a control module decides whether to shut the engine down. It only does so when the background conditions are met — the 12 V battery is holding enough charge, the engine is up to temperature, and the cabin doesn’t need strong heating or cooling. Press the clutch (or lift the brake on an automatic) and the engine spins straight back up. A heavy-duty battery and reinforced starter cope with the extra cycling, which is why 12 V battery health matters so much to how smoothly it behaves.

Before You Start

  • You can press the button with the engine running — no need to park or select any gear.
  • Locate the button before you set off so you don’t take your eyes off the road.
  • About to work under the bonnet? Switch the system off first so the engine can’t auto-restart.

Turning Start&Stop Off

  1. Find the Start&Stop button — marked with an A inside a circular arrow — on the dash or centre console.
  2. Press it once; the indicator confirms it’s off and the engine stays running at stops.

Why It’s On Again Next Time

The Panda switches Start&Stop back on at every ignition cycle — there’s no permanent off. Press the button at the start of each drive if you don’t want it.

If the engine won’t stop anyway

If the system is on but the engine keeps idling at every stop, one of the inhibit conditions is almost certainly being met — it’s rarely a fault. Work through these:

  • Cold engine. Straight after a cold start the engine stays running until it warms up; stops only begin once it’s at temperature.
  • Weak 12 V battery. A tired battery, or one drained by lots of short trips, is the most common reason. The car protects itself by keeping the engine running to recharge.
  • Climate demand. On a very hot or very cold day, when the heater or air-con is working hard, the system holds off so cabin comfort isn’t interrupted.
  • On a slope. The Panda often keeps running on a noticeable gradient so it can pull away cleanly.
  • Foot position. The car must be fully stopped with firm brake pressure (or in neutral with the clutch up on a manual).
  • Bonnet or belt. If a door or the bonnet isn’t properly shut, or the driver’s belt is undone, the system may stay inactive for safety.

On mild-hybrid Pandas the system is managed largely automatically, and stops can feel different from the pure-petrol cars.

What to Expect After

With Start&Stop switched off, the indicator light shows the system is disabled and the engine idles normally at every stop for the rest of that drive. Nothing else changes — fuel use rises very slightly in stop-go traffic, which is the trade-off. Next time you start the car the system re-arms itself, so you’ll see the light return to its normal ready state and, if you want it off again, you press the button once more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off Start&Stop on a Fiat Panda?

Press the A circled-arrow button on the dash or console once. The indicator confirms the system is disabled for the current drive, and the engine will idle at stops instead of shutting down. There’s no menu step to remember — it’s a single press each time you set off.

Can I disable it permanently?

No — the Panda re-arms Start&Stop every time you switch the ignition on, so there is no factory setting to keep it off for good. The only way is to press the button at the start of each drive. This is deliberate, because the fuel-saving and emissions benefit is measured with the system active.

Why didn’t the engine stop today?

Because at least one inhibit condition was met. The usual culprits are a cold engine that hasn’t reached temperature, a 12 V battery that’s low on charge, strong heating or cooling demand, or being parked on a gradient. All of these are normal and the system simply waits until conditions suit before it starts cutting the engine.

Is it bad to leave it on?

No — the engine, starter and battery are all built for constant stop-start cycling, so leaving it enabled won’t wear anything out early. The one thing to watch is battery health: as a 12 V battery ages, the system can become erratic or drop out, which is often the first sign the battery needs testing.

Does turning it off improve performance?

Not really. Switching Start&Stop off only stops the engine cutting out at a standstill; it doesn’t change power or throttle response. Some owners simply prefer the smoother feel in heavy traffic or when manoeuvring, which is a fair reason to disable it for a drive.

Could a Start&Stop warning mean something is wrong?

If a dedicated fault message appears rather than the normal ready light, it usually points to the 12 V battery or its charging state, not a serious engine problem. Have the battery tested first, and look up any stored code before spending on parts.

If a Start&Stop fault shows, it usually points to the 12 V battery — see our Panda battery guide, or look the code up on autodtcs.com.
