Before electrical work on a 2009–2014 Ford F-150 you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. The truck relearns idle and shift strategy afterward. This is the US-market procedure.
- Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
- Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment (group 65, 750 CCA).
- Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
- Reconnect positive first, negative last. Don’t ground add-on accessories to the negative post — it feeds the battery-monitor sensor.
- Reset the clock and radio, then drive ~10 miles so the idle and transmission strategies relearn.
FAQ
Which battery does it use?
A group-65, 750-CCA battery (BXT-65-750) across all engines.
Why avoid grounding accessories to the negative post?
A sensor on the negative cable measures battery current; grounding add-ons there throws off its reading. Ground to the body instead.
Rough idle after reconnecting?
Normal — the engine and transmission relearn over the next few miles.
If your F-150 stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
