Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Ford Kuga Mk3 (2020–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job on the petrol and diesel versions. This guide covers safe disconnection and what to re-teach afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, under a cover. The 1.5/2.0 EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue diesel Kugas have no high-voltage system. On the full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid Kuga there is also an orange high-voltage system — never touch it; this guide is for the 12 V battery only.
Disconnecting
- Switch the ignition off, remove the key/fob and wait a minute for the electronics to sleep.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and tuck the lead aside.
- If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then the clamp.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last.
- Reset the clock; the SYNC screen reloads on its own.

- Auto Start-Stop may sit out for a drive or two while the battery monitor relearns — normal.
A like-for-like battery generally doesn’t need coding; a different type/capacity should be registered with an OBD tool so the charging matches.
