Reset the Power Windows (Auto-Up/Down)

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk8 (CP/CS) 2008-2012.

After the 12V battery has been disconnected or gone flat, the Accord’s one-touch auto-up/auto-down windows stop working until the control unit is re-taught. The glass still moves while you hold the switch; the reset restores the automatic function.

How to reset the power windows on a Honda Accord (2008–2012)

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (II).
  2. Lower the glass all the way with the window DOWN switch.
  3. Open the driver’s door.
  4. Do this three times, each move within 5 seconds of the last: ignition OFF (0); press and hold the window DOWN switch; ignition ON (II); release the switch.
  5. Check that auto-up no longer works. If it still does, start again from step 1.
  6. Lower the glass fully again.
  7. Pull UP and hold the switch until the window is fully closed, then hold for 1 more second.
  8. Test auto-up and auto-down — both should now work.

The 5-second timing between moves is the part people miss; if it doesn’t take, repeat a little faster. On push-button-start cars, use the OFF and ON ignition modes (no foot on the brake) in place of the key positions. The front passenger window is reset from the passenger’s own switch.

Frequently asked questions

Why did auto-up stop after a dead battery?

The window control unit loses its learned limits when power is cut. The window still works while you hold the switch, but one-touch auto stays off until you re-initialize it.

Do I need a scan tool?

No. The switch procedure re-teaches the control unit with no equipment. A dealer uses the same idea through the diagnostic system, but it isn’t necessary.

It still won’t auto-close — now what?

Repeat the steps, watching the 5-second limit closely. If it still fails, the window motor or its pulse sensor may be at fault rather than the reset.
