Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk8 (FA/FG/FD) 2006-2011.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2006–2011 Honda Civic you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. Have your radio code ready. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last.
  5. Re-enter the radio code, reset the clock, and re-initialise the auto-up windows if needed.

FAQ

Will I lose the radio?

It locks until you enter the code from your owner’s card; the clock also resets.

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Windows won’t auto-up afterward.

Re-initialise the power windows (hold each switch up at the top of travel for a couple of seconds) after reconnecting.

If your Civic stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
