Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk8 (FA/FG/FD) 2006-2011.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2006–2011 Honda Civic cranking. Ground the last clamp to the body’s grounding strap, not the engine or the dead battery. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Park a 12 V donor close but not touching; transmission in Park/Neutral, parking brake on, accessories off.
  2. Red (+) to the Civic’s positive (+), then to the donor’s positive (+).
  3. Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to the Civic’s grounding strap (as shown) — not another part of the engine.
  4. Run the donor at a fast idle, start the Civic, remove the cables in reverse order.

FAQ

Where do I ground?

The body grounding strap shown in the manual — not the dead battery’s negative post.

Do I re-enter the radio code afterward?

Only if the battery went fully flat; a quick jump usually keeps the memory alive.

Can’t be push-started?

Automatics can’t; use cables or a jump pack.

If your Civic stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
