Jump Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 6, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk3 (RE) 2007-2012.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A flat 12V battery on the Honda CR-V (RE, 2007-2012) can be jump started from another vehicle. Connect the cables in the right order and use the engine ground point for the final clamp.

Jump start the CR-V

  1. Park the donor car close but not touching. Turn off all accessories in both cars, set the parking brakes and put automatics in P.
  2. Connect one end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
  3. Connect the other red end to the positive (+) terminal of the donor battery.
  4. Connect one end of the black cable to the donor’s negative (−) terminal.
  5. Connect the other black end to a bare metal ground point / stud bolt on the CR-V’s engine — not to the dead battery’s negative terminal.
  6. Start the donor car and let it idle, then start the CR-V.
  7. Once running, remove the cables in reverse order, keeping the clamps from touching each other or bodywork.

Drive or idle for a while afterwards to recharge. If the battery goes flat again, have it and the charging system tested.

Frequently asked questions

Why ground to the engine, not the battery? It keeps the final spark away from the battery, which can give off flammable gas.

Can I push-start it? No — the automatic cannot be push-started, and it is not recommended on the manual either.
