If it takes several presses to lock or unlock your Honda CR-V (RE, 2007-2012), the remote battery is weak. The fob uses a CR1616 coin cell and the swap takes a couple of minutes.
Replace the battery
- Slide out the mechanical key blade (if your fob has one) for easier access.
- Remove the small screw at the base of the transmitter with a small Phillips screwdriver.
- Pry the fob apart at its middle seam with a fingernail or a plastic tool.
- Lift out the old CR1616 cell and fit the new one with the + side facing the same way as the old cell.
- Click the halves back together, refit the screw and test lock/unlock.
Replacing the battery does not erase the remote — no reprogramming is needed. Only a lost or brand-new transmitter has to be paired by a dealer or auto-locksmith.
Frequently asked questions
What battery does the CR-V key use? A 3V CR1616 coin cell.
The remote still works poorly with a new battery. Clean the contacts, check the cell is seated the right way up, and make sure the two halves clip together fully.
