The third-generation Honda CR-V uses Honda’s Maintenance Minder: after an oil or service change you clear the engine oil-life percentage and the SERVICE message with the instrument-panel SELECT/RESET knob. No tool is needed.
How the Maintenance Minder works
The computer counts down the engine oil life as a percentage. At 15% the wrench indicator appears; from 5% to 1% a SERVICE message shows with maintenance codes (a main letter A or B plus sub-numbers 1-6). At 0% the display blinks and negative distance is shown.
Reset only after the service is actually done, or the recorded intervals will be wrong.
Reset the oil-life / service indicator
- Turn the ignition to ON (position II) without starting the engine.
- Press the SELECT/RESET knob on the instrument panel repeatedly until the engine oil-life (or SERVICE) display appears and the figure flashes.
- Press and hold the knob for about 10 seconds until “OIL LIFE” and “CANCEL” are shown.
- Turn the knob until “OIL LIFE” flashes, then press the knob to select it.
- Press and hold the knob again for about 10 seconds until the display reads “100% OIL LIFE” and the maintenance codes clear.
- Turn the ignition off. The indicator is now reset.
Base trims without the multi-function display use a shorter version: scroll to the oil-life screen with the knob, then press and hold until it resets to 100%.
Frequently asked questions
What do the B1, A1 and similar codes mean? The letter is the main job (A = oil change, B = oil change plus a fuller inspection); the numbers are sub-items such as 1 = rotate tires, 3 = transmission fluid, 4 = replace the dust and pollen filter.
The wrench light came back on after a few miles. If the display shows negative distance or the reset did not take, repeat the procedure with the ignition in position II and the engine off.
Do I have to use a Honda dealer? No. Any competent service resets the display the same way; keep your receipts for the service record.
