Jump Start a Dead Battery

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i10 Mk1 (PA) 2008-2013.

A flat battery on the Hyundai i10 (2008-2013) can be jump started from another 12-volt car. Connect the cables in the correct order and ground the last clamp to bare metal.

Jump start the i10

  1. Park the donor car close but not touching. Switch off all accessories in both cars and set the parking brakes.
  2. Red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the i10’s flat battery.
  3. Other red end to the donor’s positive (+).
  4. Black cable to the donor’s negative (−).
  5. Other black end to a solid metal bracket on the i10’s engine (such as the engine lifting hook) − not the flat battery’s negative post.
  6. Start the donor and let it run at about 2,000 rpm, then start the i10.
  7. Remove the cables in reverse order without letting the clamps touch each other or the body.

Drive or idle for a while to recharge. If the battery goes flat again, have it and the charging system tested.

Frequently asked questions

Why ground to the engine instead of the battery? It keeps the final spark away from the battery, which can vent flammable hydrogen gas.

Can I push-start it? No. Hyundai warns against push-starting the manual i10 − it can damage the catalytic converter. Use jumper cables.

Chasing a dashboard fault code instead? Look it up on autodtcs.com.
