Replace the Key Fob Battery

When the smart key for a Jaguar E-Pace (X540, 2017–present) only locks the car from arm’s length, needs a second or third press, or has stopped waking the keyless system altogether, the cause is nearly always the little coin cell inside it running flat. The E-Pace ships with a single style of key — Jaguar’s one-piece keyless smart fob with a hidden emergency blade — so there is only one battery and one opening method to learn. How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying

  • Shrinking range. You find yourself standing right next to the E-Pace, or almost touching the fob to the door handle, before it will lock or unlock. A steadily shrinking range is the classic first warning.
  • Keyless entry gets lazy. The passive door handles stop responding on the first tug, or the car is slow to detect the key when you press the start button. A weak cell can no longer answer the car’s wake-up signal reliably.
  • A “Smart Key Battery Low” message. The E-Pace shows a low-key-battery warning in the instrument cluster when the fob’s cell drops below a healthy voltage — treat it as a prompt to change the cell soon, not an emergency.
  • Cold-weather dropouts. A near-flat lithium cell sags further when it is cold, so a fob that works in a warm garage may fail on a frosty morning.

A CR2032 in an E-Pace smart key usually lasts two to four years, though heavy keyless use — or leaving the fob sitting close to the car so it wakes repeatedly — can shorten that. If yours is a few years old and showing any of these signs, fit a fresh cell before you suspect the car’s receiver or immobiliser.

The Battery You Need

The E-Pace smart key uses a single CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell — the same cell Jaguar and Land Rover fit across their modern range, and the most common fob battery there is. Buy a good-quality branded cell (Duracell, Energizer, Panasonic, Sony, Varta and similar). Cheap unbranded cells sag under the brief high current the transmitter draws and can give poor range even when brand new. Watch the size code: a CR2025 is thinner and holds less charge — it may sit loose and won’t last, so stick to CR2032. Handle the new cell by its edge; finger grease on the flat faces can foul the contacts.

Method — Opening the E-Pace Smart Key

  1. Release the emergency blade. Press the small catch on the side of the fob and slide the metal emergency key blade straight out of the body. This blade is both your backup door key and the tool you’ll use to open the case.
  2. Find the seam. With the blade removed you’ll see the slot it came out of and a fine seam running around the edge of the fob where the front and back halves meet.
  3. Split the case. Insert the emergency blade (or a flat plastic pry tool) into the seam and gently twist to lever the two halves apart. Work around the edge rather than forcing one spot — the shells are held by plastic clips, so a little patience beats a cracked case.
  4. Note the orientation, then lift the cell out. Look at which way the old cell sits before you disturb it. In the E-Pace fob the new CR2032 seats positive (+) side up. Ease the old cell out from under its retaining clip.
  5. Fit the fresh cell. Drop the new CR2032 in positive-side up, making sure it sits flat and fully under the clip against clean contacts.
  6. Close it up. Line up the two halves and press them together until the clips snap home all the way round, then slide the emergency blade back in until it latches.

⚠️ Get the polarity right. Fit the CR2032 positive (+) side up, exactly as the cell you removed sat. A coin cell fitted upside down won’t power the fob and can quietly discharge against the contacts — so always copy the orientation of the old cell rather than guessing.

Check It Worked

If your E-Pace has passive keyless entry, give the fresh cell a minute or two to settle before testing — some owners find the key responds more reliably after a short pause. Then stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the car with the buttons; full range should return at once. Walk up to a passive door handle to confirm keyless entry wakes on the first try, and press the start button to check the car detects the key. The “Smart Key Battery Low” message clears the next time the car reads a healthy fob, which may take a drive cycle rather than clearing instantly.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It

  • Re-check polarity and seating. The single most common mistake is a cell fitted upside down or sitting proud of its clip. Confirm positive-side up and that the cell is flat against the contacts.
  • Wipe the contacts. A smear of finger grease or light corrosion on the terminals is enough to cause dropouts — clean them with a dry cloth or a cotton bud.
  • Try a different cell. A new battery can still be a weak one, especially if it has sat on a shelf for years. Swap in another known-good CR2032 before condemning the fob.
  • Rule out the car. Rarely, a tired 12 V vehicle battery can make the E-Pace slow to wake and mimic a key fault. If the car itself is sluggish to respond, the aux battery — not the fob — may be the culprit.

New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job

Changing the cell keeps the fob’s existing coding, so a battery swap needs no reprogramming — the key works straight away. Cutting or coding a new key is a different matter. The E-Pace’s immobiliser has to be accessed with Jaguar-approved diagnostic equipment, and blank smart fobs are ordered and authenticated against the car’s VIN. That makes adding a spare or replacing a lost key a job for a Jaguar dealer or a specialist auto-locksmith. The practical takeaway: keep the battery in your spare key fresh too, so you’re never down to a single working fob and forced into that dealer visit unexpectedly.
