If the remote on your Jeep Renegade (2014–present) has lost its range, needs several presses, or has stopped responding, the coin cell inside the fob is almost certainly flat. It’s a quick swap once you know to slide the emergency key out first. Here’s the job, plus why a brand-new key has to come from Jeep.
Battery First
The Renegade fob uses a CR2032 coin cell. A weak cell is behind nearly every “Renegade remote not working” case, so fit a fresh one before suspecting anything else. The fob holds a pull-out mechanical key that unlocks the driver’s door if the remote is dead.
Replacing the Fob Battery
- Slide out the emergency (mechanical) key from the fob.
- Open the cover with a small screwdriver at the seam.
- Lift out the old CR2032 and fit the new cell the same way round (note the polarity as you remove it).
- Close the cover and refit the mechanical key, then test lock and unlock.
Lost Key or Adding a Spare
A battery swap keeps the existing coding. If a key is lost or broken, a replacement can only be ordered from a Jeep dealer and coded with a diagnostic tool — there’s no owner sequence to program a new transponder.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help
- Check polarity and the contacts — the usual reason a swap doesn’t take.
- Use the emergency key to get in while you sort it.
- Keyless-go Renegade? Hold the fob against the START button to start the car if the battery is flat, and check for a stored code on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Jeep Renegade key fob use?
A CR2032 coin cell — confirm by checking the old one when you open the fob.
Do I need to reprogram the fob after the swap?
No — the coding is retained for a battery change.
Can I program a new Renegade key myself?
No — a replacement must be ordered from Jeep and coded with a diagnostic tool.
How do I open the fob?
Slide the emergency key out first, then prise the cover off with a small screwdriver.
If the remote stopped working right after a battery disconnection, see our Renegade battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
