Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

If your Kia Cee’d Mk2 (JD, 2012–2018) has the Smart Key system — the fob you keep in your pocket with an engine start/stop button — a flat fob battery will stop it unlocking and starting the car passively. You can still get in and drive: the fob has a hidden mechanical key, and the start button has a backup antenna built in for exactly this “limp-home” situation.

Does this apply to your Cee’d?

This is only for cars with Smart Key / keyless start (a start/stop button on the dash and no metal key you normally insert). If your Cee’d uses a flip key you turn in the ignition, you do not need this — a flat remote there just means you lose remote locking, and you can still start normally. On those cars, simply replace the key fob battery.

Unlock the car with a dead fob

1. Slide the small release catch on the Smart Key fob and pull out the mechanical emergency key hidden inside.
2. Use that metal key in the driver’s door lock to unlock the car. (The alarm may sound; it stops once you switch the ignition on in the next steps.)
3. Push the emergency key back into the fob once you are inside.

Start the engine with a dead fob

The Cee’d start/stop button has an immobiliser backup antenna inside it. Holding the fob against the button lets the car read the transponder even when the fob battery is flat — the factory calls this limp-home mode.

1. Press the brake pedal (automatic) or the clutch pedal (manual) and keep it pressed.
2. Touch the Smart Key fob directly onto the ENGINE START/STOP button — press the button with the fob itself.
3. The button reads the fob’s transponder and switches on; with the pedal still pressed, press the START/STOP button again to start the engine.
4. Once running, replace the fob battery as soon as you can so passive entry and start work again.

Where is the mechanical key on the Cee’d Smart Key?

It is a slim blade stored inside the fob. Slide the release button on the side or back of the fob and the key pulls straight out.

Why won’t the car start even though I’m sitting on the fob?

A flat fob battery cannot transmit at normal range, so the car cannot detect it passively. Hold the fob directly against the start/stop button so the backup antenna can read it.

Will the alarm go off when I use the metal key?

It can, because you are unlocking without a recognised remote signal. Switching the ignition on with the fob against the button clears it.

Is it just a flat battery, or something worse?

If a fresh coin cell restores normal operation, it was the battery. If the fob still will not work against the button, the transponder or Smart Key unit may need checking — look up any security or immobiliser warning on autodtcs.com first.
