Home/Kia/Niro/Mk1 (DE) 2016-2022/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Kia Niro Mk1 (DE) 2016-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the touchscreen in your Kia Niro (Mk1, DE, 2016–2022) — Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid or e-Niro EV — has frozen, gone black, dropped CarPlay or stopped responding to taps, you can force the head unit to reboot yourself in under a minute, with no tools.

Which system the Mk1 Niro uses

The Mk1 Niro runs Kia’s Display Audio / UVO head unit — a 7-inch screen as standard, with an 8-inch or, on the facelift, a 10.25-inch Kia Connect navigation display higher up the range. All are touch-operated with a power/volume rotary knob on the left and hard shortcut keys. A frozen Niro screen is a software lock-up in the head unit; the hybrid system, drive and climate keep working because only the display has stuck.

Soft reset (reboot) the screen

Park with the car switched on (READY or ignition on) so the unit stays powered.

  1. Find the power/volume knob on the left of the screen (press to mute).
  2. Press and hold it in.
  3. Keep holding for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Kia logo appears.
  4. Release the knob.
  5. Allow 30–60 seconds for the home screen, radio and camera to reload.

The Niro also has a small pinhole RESET on the bezel near the knob. Use a straightened paperclip on the recessed button for about 5 seconds until the screen blacks out — same reboot, and the method Niro owners most often rely on when the screen goes dark.

Safe — it loses no data

This reboot is harmless. It does not wipe radio presets, paired phones, navigation favourites or settings — the unit simply reloads its software, clearing corrupted code from memory. Repeat as needed.

If it stays frozen

  • Use the pinhole. If the knob-hold did nothing, the pinhole RESET near the knob is the dedicated reboot.
  • Cycle the ignition. Switch off, open the driver’s door, lock the car, wait a couple of minutes, then unlock and restart.
  • Suspect the phone link. If freezes happen with CarPlay or Android Auto, unplug, swap to a known-good USB cable and re-pair.
  • Update the software. Niro screens that go dark or hang after a botched update are fixed by the latest Kia firmware/map update — from the Kia Update site (USB) or a dealer.
  • Disconnect the 12V battery. As a last resort, disconnect the 12V negative (−) terminal for 10 minutes and reconnect.

Factory reset (erases data — rarely needed)

Separate from the reboot, and only for selling the car or clearing a persistent glitch. On the touchscreen go to Setup → General → Reset, or Settings → System → Restore Factory Settings on navigation units, and confirm. It wipes paired phones, presets, navigation favourites and settings back to factory defaults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will rebooting my Niro lose my presets and paired phone?

No. The knob-hold and pinhole only reload the software — presets, navigation favourites and pairings stay. Only the factory reset in the menu clears them.

My e-Niro screen went dark after a software update — how do I recover it?

Press the pinhole RESET for 5 seconds, or hold the volume knob for 10, to force a reboot. If it stays dark, disconnect the 12V battery for 10 minutes. A unit that never wakes after a failed update needs a dealer re-flash.

Where is the reset pinhole on the Mk1 Niro?

It is a tiny recessed hole on the screen bezel near the power/volume knob, marked RESET. A paperclip held for about 5 seconds triggers the reboot.

Does this work the same on Hybrid, PHEV and e-Niro?

Yes. All Mk1 Niro variants share the same Display Audio / UVO head unit, so the knob-hold and pinhole reboot are identical. Only the battery you’d disconnect as a last resort is the 12V auxiliary, not the high-voltage pack — never touch the orange high-voltage cabling.

Is it safe to drive with the Niro screen frozen?

Yes. The head unit is independent of the drive and brakes — you only lose audio, phone, navigation and the camera. Reboot when parked.

If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
