Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 9, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mazda 2 Mk3 (DJ/DL) 2015-2022.

The cabin (pollen) air filter on the Mazda 2 (DJ, 2015–2022) sits behind the glovebox, and swapping it is a no-tools job of about ten to fifteen minutes. A clogged filter is the usual reason for weak airflow, misted windows that won’t clear, or a musty smell from the vents.

What You Need

  • A new cabin filter — Mazda genuine D651-61-J6X, or a common equivalent such as MANN CUK 20 018 or MAHLE LA 1361. Fit an activated-carbon type if you want odour filtering.
  • No tools are needed; a torch helps.

As a guide, change it about once a year or every 12,000–15,000 miles — more often in dusty areas or heavy pollen. Mazda treats it as a scheduled-service item.

How to Replace the Cabin Filter

  1. Open the glovebox and empty it.
  2. Squeeze both sides of the glovebox inward so the side stops clear their slots, then let the glovebox swing fully down (on some cars you also release a small damper arm on the right).
  3. You’ll now see the flat filter cover in the housing behind. Release its tabs and remove the cover.
  4. Slide out the old filter. Note the airflow arrow on its frame before it comes out — it points downward (in the direction of airflow).
  5. Fit the new filter the same way round, arrow pointing down. Make sure it seats flat with no folded edges.
  6. Refit the cover, then lift the glovebox back up and click both sides back into place. Check it opens and closes normally.
  7. Run the fan to confirm airflow has improved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the cabin filter on a Mazda 2?

Behind the glovebox. Drop the glovebox down by squeezing its sides past the stops, and the filter is in a flat housing directly behind it — no trim panels or tools required.

Which cabin filter fits a Mazda 2 (DJ)?

The Mazda genuine part is D651-61-J6X; widely available equivalents include MANN CUK 20 018 and MAHLE LA 1361. Activated-carbon versions add odour filtering for a little more money.

Which way does the filter go in?

Follow the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame — it points downward, the direction air flows into the heater box. Fitting it upside-down reduces airflow and can let the filter pleats collapse.

How often should I change it?

About once a year or every 12,000–15,000 miles is typical, sooner if you drive in dust or heavy pollen. If airflow is already weak or the vents smell musty, change it now regardless of mileage.
