Put the Wipers in Service Position

To change the front wiper blades on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W205, 2014–2023) you first have to move the wipers into their service position — standing upright in the middle of the screen. They park low under the bonnet line, so you cannot lift them far enough to swap a blade until the car releases them. The W205 method is a little different from most cars, so here is exactly how.

Why You Can’t Just Lift the Wipers

At rest the W205’s wiper arms tuck down under the lip of the bonnet. Pull one up from there and it fouls the bonnet — risking a bent arm or scratched paint. Service position stands the arms upright where there is room to fold the blade out and clip a new one on.

How to Enter Service Position on the W205

  1. Make sure the bonnet is closed.
  2. Turn the ignition on.
  3. Move the wiper stalk to continuous (normal) wipe so the wipers start sweeping.
  4. As soon as the wipers reach the upright/vertical position, turn the ignition off. The wipers stop where they are — in the service position.

The trick is the timing: switching off mid-stroke leaves the arms standing up the screen instead of parking back down.

Changing the Blades

  1. Lift the arm away from the glass until it locks upright.
  2. Release the blade clip and slide the old blade off the fitting.
  3. Clip the new blade on until it clicks, then gently lower the arm back onto the screen.

How to Return the Wipers to Normal

Turn the ignition on and operate the wipers once — they sweep and park back down below the bonnet line. Always bring them out of service position before driving.

Winter Tip

Service position is also handy for lifting the blades off the glass overnight in frost so they don’t freeze down — but never enter it if the blades are already frozen to the screen, as the motor or linkage can be damaged. Free them first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the W205 wipers to stand up?

Turn the ignition on, start a continuous wipe, and switch the ignition off the instant the wipers reach the vertical position — they stop there.

How do I get them back down?

Turn the ignition on and run the wipers once; they park back to the bottom.

Can I just pull the wiper arm up instead?

Not from the parked position — the arm fouls the bonnet. Use service position so the arm clears the bodywork.

Do I need any tools?

No — entering service position and changing the blades is a no-tools job.
