These instructions apply to the Nissan Armada Mk1 (TA60) 2004-2015.

The instrument cluster in the Nissan Armada (TA60, 2004–2015) hides a self-diagnosis mode that checks the meter itself — gauges, warning lamps, LCD segments and the battery voltage the cluster reads — without a scan tool. It is the quickest way to tell a faulty gauge from a faulty sender when something on the dash looks wrong.

Opening the Self-Test

The whole routine runs from the odometer/trip meter button beneath the gauges. Because it is entered on a timer, read the steps before you try.

  1. With the engine off, get in and leave the ignition OFF.
  2. Hold the odometer/trip meter button down and, still holding it, turn the ignition to ON — do not start the engine.
  3. Keep holding for 5 to 8 seconds until the odometer reads tESt.
  4. Release the button. The gauges sweep and then return to their live readings within about ten seconds.
  5. Each further press moves on: all LCD segments lit, then the full lamp and LED test, then the estimated battery voltage, then the driver’s seat-belt buckle status.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF or to ACC to leave the mode.

If a trip meter is on screen when you start, that trip resets to zero — note the reading first if you need it.

Interpreting the Checks

  • Gauge sweep: a needle that hesitates here is a cluster fault; one that sweeps cleanly but reads wrong on the road points to the sender.
  • Segment test: a gap in the odometer or trip display means a dead LCD segment.
  • Lamp test: a warning lamp that will not light is a cluster or bulb issue, not a fault in the system it watches.
  • Voltage read-out: a fast check of what the cluster believes the battery is doing.

Leaving the Mode

Switch off and the Armada is back to normal at the next start. Nothing is written, set or cleared — it is purely a display and lamp test. The exception worth noting is a flashing “FAIL” during the lamp step, which means the cluster has recorded an internal fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this reset a warning light? No — it only exercises the display and lamps and clears no codes.

Can I read engine codes here? No. This tests the cluster; engine codes need a scan tool on the diagnostic socket.

The test will not start. Keep the button held as you switch to ON and hold the full 5 to 8 seconds until tESt appears; if it still fails, check the cluster’s power and ground.

Is it safe with the engine off? Yes — it is meant to run on ignition ON, engine stopped.

If the check-engine lamp is on and you want to look up the code, our sister site autodtcs.com lists engine trouble codes.
