Relearn the Idle Air Volume Without a Scan Tool

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Nissan Armada Mk1 (TA60) 2004-2015.

After the battery has been off, the throttle body cleaned, or the electronic throttle serviced, the Nissan Armada (TA60, 2004–2015) and its 5.6-litre VK56DE V8 can idle roughly until the ECM relearns its settings. You can complete the full relearn yourself with no scan tool — it is an exact sequence of ignition and pedal moves.

Conditions That Must Be Met

The learn only takes if every one of these holds throughout; if one drops out even briefly it cancels:

  • Battery above 12.9 V at idle.
  • Coolant between 70 and 100 °C (158–212 °F).
  • Transmission in P or N; steering straight; vehicle stopped.
  • Air conditioning and headlights off.
  • Transmission warmed — drive about 10 minutes first.

The Relearn Sequence

It is three learns performed in order. Time the steps with a clock.

  1. Accelerator-pedal released position: pedal fully up, ignition ON at least 2 seconds, OFF at least 10; ON again at least 2 seconds, OFF at least 10.
  2. Throttle-valve closed position: start cold (coolant below 25 °C/77 °F), warm past 65 °C (149 °F), then switch off and wait at least 10 seconds while the throttle valve cycles.
  3. Restart and bring the V8 to normal operating temperature, then confirm every condition above.
  4. Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
  5. Pedal fully released, turn the ignition ON and wait 3 seconds.
  6. Within 5 seconds, fully depress and fully release the accelerator five times.
  7. Wait 7 seconds, then hold the pedal flat for about 20 seconds until the malfunction lamp stops blinking and stays on.
  8. Release the pedal within 3 seconds of the lamp going steady.
  9. Start the engine, let it idle and wait 20 seconds.
  10. Rev two or three times and confirm the idle sits near 650 rpm in P or N.

If the Learn Fails

The usual culprit is a condition that slipped — a load switching on, coolant cooling below the window, or a timing that was off. Confirm the throttle valve closes fully, check for an intake leak, then run the sequence again from the start. A V8 that still idles poorly after a clean learn typically has a vacuum leak or a throttle body needing a proper clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a scan tool? No — this is the no-tool method for the VK56DE.

When is it needed? After a battery disconnect or replacement, a throttle-body clean, or replacing the throttle actuator or ECM.

The warning lamp came on during the pedal steps. That is expected — it blinks then holds steady as a cue during the idle-air-volume step; it is not logging a fault.

What is the correct idle? Around 650 rpm (±50) in P or N, with ignition timing near 15° BTDC.
