These instructions apply to the Nissan Navara (D40) 2005-2015.

This guide applies to the North American Nissan Frontier (D40, 2005–2021) with the petrol QR25DE four-cylinder or VQ40DE V6. The D40 platform is sold as the Navara elsewhere, but the diesel EU/Australian Navara does not use this petrol idle relearn — it is specific to the petrol Frontier. After a battery disconnect, a throttle-body clean or a throttle repair the engine can idle roughly until the control unit relearns its settings; you can do the whole relearn with no scan tool.
Conditions That Must Hold
The learn only succeeds if every condition stays true throughout — if one slips even for a moment it cancels:
- Battery above 12.9 V at idle.
- Coolant at 70–95 °C (158–203 °F).
- Manual in Neutral, or automatic in P/N (park/neutral switch on); steering straight; vehicle stopped.
- Air conditioning and headlights off.
- Transmission warmed — drive about 10 minutes first.
The Full Relearn, Step by Step
It runs as the accelerator-pedal and throttle learns, then the idle-air-volume learn. Time the steps with a clock.
- Accelerator-pedal released position learn: pedal fully up, ignition ON at least 2 seconds, OFF at least 10; ON again at least 2 seconds, OFF at least 10.
- Throttle-valve closed position learn: start cold, warm the engine, then switch off and wait at least 10 seconds while the throttle valve cycles.
- Start the engine and warm it to normal operating temperature; confirm every condition above.
- Turn the ignition OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
- With the pedal fully released, turn the ignition ON and wait 3 seconds.
- Within 5 seconds, fully depress and fully release the accelerator pedal 5 times.
- Wait 7 seconds, then fully depress the pedal and hold it about 20 seconds until the malfunction indicator lamp stops blinking and stays on.
- Release the pedal within 3 seconds of the lamp going steady.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 20 seconds.
- Rev two or three times and confirm the idle: 625 rpm in Neutral on a manual, or about 700 rpm in P/N on an automatic.
If It Will Not Complete
The usual cause is a condition that drifted mid-sequence — a load switching on, the engine not fully warm, or a mistimed step. Confirm the throttle valve closes fully, check for an intake air leak, then repeat from the start. Persistent hunting after a clean learn points to a vacuum leak or a throttle body that needs a proper clean. If you have just reconnected the battery, our D40 battery disconnect and reconnect guide covers the other items that need resetting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this apply to my diesel Navara? No — this petrol idle relearn is for the North American Frontier (QR25DE/VQ40DE). The diesel EU/AU Navara uses a different procedure.
Do I need a scan tool? No — the sequence above is the no-tool method.
The MIL blinked during the pedal steps — is that a fault? No — it is meant to blink then hold steady as a cue during the idle-air-volume step.
What idle is correct? About 625 rpm (manual, Neutral) or 700 rpm (automatic, P/N), with ignition timing near specification.
