The small red light that comes on and then blinks on a parked Nissan Navara (D40, 2005–2015) — sold as the Nissan Frontier in North America — is the security (immobiliser) indicator for the Nissan Anti-Theft System (NATS, also called NVIS). The blinking is normal and works as a theft deterrent; a light that stays on steady with the ignition ON, or an engine that cranks but will not start, is what points to a fault.
What the Light Does Normally
- After you switch off and remove the key, the security indicator illuminates for about 30 seconds, then starts to blink — showing the truck is immobilised.
- It draws very little current, so it will not flatten the battery over normal parking periods.
- NATS only lets a key whose ID is registered in the truck start the engine, which is why it deters copied or stolen keys.
When It Signals a Problem
Each start, NATS checks the transponder built into the head of your ignition key. If the system detects a fault, the security indicator illuminates when the ignition is turned to ON. Suspect a problem when:
- The light stays on steady with the ignition ON, or
- The engine cranks but will not start (or starts and stalls within a second).
The classic NATS symptom is exactly this “engine cannot start” condition. Common causes: a damaged transponder in the key, another transponder key held against the one in use, or a fault in the NATS antenna around the ignition barrel.
What You Can Try
- Use only one key. Separate your keys and try again with just the one, held normally in the ignition — two transponders together can confuse the antenna.
- Try your spare key. If the spare starts the truck, the first key’s transponder is likely damaged.
- Still no start? Registering a key to NATS — and diagnosing the system — is done with dealer/locksmith diagnostic equipment; up to five keys can be registered, but it is not an owner sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the blinking light draining my battery? No — the indicator is efficient and barely affects the battery over normal parking.
Can I switch the blinking off? No, and you would not want to — it is the working immobiliser deterrent.
The light is on steady and the truck will not start — what now? Try the spare key, and separate any other transponders. If it still will not start, NATS needs diagnosis at a dealer or auto locksmith.
Can I add a spare key myself? No — NATS key registration requires diagnostic equipment; all your existing keys must be present for the procedure.
