Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Porsche Panamera Mk2 (971) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Porsche Panamera (971, 2017–Present) sticks with the Porsche signature: the ignition is operated by sliding the fob into a key slot and twisting, not by a simple push-button. On the Panamera that slot sits low in the centre console to the left of the cupholders, so the car starts even when the fob’s coin cell is completely dead.

Start the Panamera with a dead fob

  1. Get into the car using the emergency blade first (next section), then sit down and close the driver’s door.
  2. Find the key slot at the bottom of the centre-console compartment, to the left of the cupholders and marked with a key symbol.
  3. Push the flat face of the fob into the slot until it seats; the back-up reader coil energises the chip.
  4. Press the brake pedal and twist the fob clockwise to start. The engine fires and you can release.

If the dash says the key is not detected, push the fob fully and squarely home and try again — the inductive read range is only about a centimetre.

Unlock the Panamera with the emergency key blade

  1. Slide the catch on the fob and pull the metal emergency blade out.
  2. The driver’s door barrel hides under a cap on the handle; lever the cap off with the blade.
  3. Insert the blade and turn to unlock. The alarm may chirp until the immobiliser reads the chip at start-up.

Why the immobiliser still reads a dead fob

The coin cell only powers the keyless proximity broadcast and the remote buttons. Engine authorisation runs through a passive RFID transponder powered inductively by the coil in the key slot — not by the battery. Seating the dead fob in the slot still lets the Panamera read the chip and start.

Replace the fob battery

The Panamera fob uses one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Pull the emergency blade and use it to lever the battery cover off, or part the casing at the seam. Lift the old cell out, fit the new one + side up, and click the cover back. Remote and keyless functions return at once with no coding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the Panamera’s key slot?

At the bottom of the centre-console compartment, to the left of the cupholders and marked with a key symbol. It is deliberately discreet, so look low and forward in the console.

My Panamera has a start button instead of a slot — what then?

Some Panameras use a push-button; hold the flat fob against the start button, keep your foot on the brake, and push to start.

Can I leave the fob in the slot while driving?

Yes. The fob can stay parked in the slot. To shut down, twist it back and the engine stops.

Why did the alarm sound when I used the blade?

A mechanical unlock reads as forced entry until the transponder is verified. The alarm stops the moment the engine starts.

Is it the fob or the 12V battery?

If the cockpit stays dark when you open the door, suspect the car’s 12V battery rather than the coin cell. A weak cell only affects the remote.

If a warning light stayed on after the no-start, look it up on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob rather than an immobiliser code.
