Disable the Stop/Start System

These instructions apply to the Porsche Panamera Mk2 (971) 2017-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The automatic stop/start on your Porsche Panamera (2017–present) — the 971 — shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. If you’d rather keep it running, switch it off with the dedicated button. The engine restarting the instant you lift off the brake is normal, designed behaviour rather than a fault, and the small ‘A’ indicator simply shows the system’s current state.

How Stop/Start Works on the Panamera

At every standstill the Panamera checks a series of conditions and only shuts the engine down when they’re all met. It relies on the 12 V battery to run the electrics and to spin the engine back up smoothly, so the energy manager keeps a close eye on battery charge and temperature. On a cold morning, after short trips, with heavy climate demand, or when a Sport mode is selected, the car will keep the engine running. That is the system working as intended, not something you need to reset.

First, a Few Checks

  • The button works with the engine running — there’s no menu to navigate.
  • The setting isn’t remembered between drives, so press it after each start if you want stop/start off.
  • If you’re driving in Sport or Sport Plus, the engine already stays running, so you may not need the button at all.
  • Give a cold engine a minute — stop/start won’t engage until it’s warmed through.

Turning Stop/Start Off

  1. Find the Auto Start/Stop button — the ‘A’ with a circular arrow, on the centre console.
  2. Press the button once.
  3. The indicator / dash message confirms the system is off — the engine now idles at a stop.

Turning It Back On

Press the button again, or restart the car — stop/start defaults to ON each time you start the engine. Selecting Sport or Sport Plus also holds the engine running. On the E-Hybrid, the engine also starts and stops under hybrid control, separately from this button.

Why It Sometimes Keeps the Engine Running

  • The battery charge is low or the battery sensor isn’t satisfied.
  • The cabin is still heating or cooling.
  • The engine is still cold, or a Sport mode is selected.
  • You’ve not come to a full stop, or the brake isn’t pressed firmly.
  • You’re on a gradient, or only pausing briefly in stop-go traffic.

If Stop/Start Won’t Work at All

If the engine never shuts off at a stop and you haven’t pressed the button, check the following:

  • A weak or ageing battery is the most common cause — the system disables itself to protect it.
  • You’re in Sport or Sport Plus, which deliberately keeps the engine running.
  • The battery hasn’t recharged after short trips; a longer drive often restores it.
  • It’s the first stop of a cold day — the engine needs to reach temperature.
  • After a battery change, fit the correct type; registering it to the energy manager needs Porsche equipment.
  • A stored fault can disable it — look up the code on autodtcs.com.

Once It’s Done

Once the button is pressed and the indicator confirms it, the engine idles normally at every stop for the rest of that drive. Nothing is saved permanently — switch the ignition off and on and stop/start returns to its default active state, ready to work again on the next trip unless you press the button once more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off stop/start on a Porsche Panamera?

Press the Auto Start/Stop ‘A’ button, marked with the circular arrow, on the centre console. The indicator or a dash message confirms the system is off, and the engine will then idle normally at every stop for the remainder of that drive.

Can I disable it permanently?

Not from the button — the Panamera resets stop/start to ON each time you start the engine, so there is no permanent dashboard setting. Sport and Sport Plus also keep the engine running, so if you drive in those modes you may rarely notice the automatic shut-off in the first place.

Why does the engine keep running with it on?

The system only stops the engine when all its conditions are satisfied. A low battery, a cabin still heating or cooling, a cold engine, a Sport mode, a gradient, or a brake not pressed firmly will all keep the engine running. This is normal, protective behaviour rather than a fault.

Why won’t stop/start work at all?

Usually a weak or ageing battery, which the Panamera disables stop/start to protect. Being in Sport mode, a run of short trips, a cold morning, or strong heating and cooling demand can also hold it off. A longer drive to recharge the battery generally restores normal operation once conditions align.

Does Sport mode turn stop/start off?

Effectively, yes — selecting Sport or Sport Plus keeps the engine running at stops for sharper throttle response, so the automatic shut-off doesn’t occur. Switch back to the standard driving mode and stop/start behaves normally again, subject to the usual battery, temperature and climate conditions being met.

What happens with the E-Hybrid Panamera?

On the E-Hybrid, the petrol engine starts and stops under the hybrid system’s control, independently of this button, so you’ll notice the engine coming and going as the car balances electric and petrol drive. The Auto Start/Stop button still governs the conventional stop/start behaviour when the engine is running.

If a warning light came on with the fault, decode it on autodtcs.com.
