These instructions apply to the RAM 1500 Mk5 (DT) 2019-present.

The cabin air filter on the RAM 1500 (DT, 2019 onward) sits behind the glove box and traps dust and pollen before it reaches the vents. RAM’s owner manual sends you to the dealer, but it’s a genuine five-minute DIY with no tools — you lower the glove box and the filter slides straight out of a slot behind it.

- Empty the glove box and open it fully.
- Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward to release it from its stops and let it drop down, exposing the filter cover behind it.
- Release the tabs on the cabin-filter cover and remove it.
- Slide the old filter out of the horizontal slot, noting the airflow arrow printed on its frame.
- Slide the new filter in the same way up so its arrow matches (a common fit is the STP CAF1864P or equivalent), then refit the cover.
- Lift the glove box back onto its stops and close it, checking it latches normally.
Frequently asked questions
Does the RAM manual really say to see the dealer?
Yes — RAM lists the cabin filter as a dealer-serviced item, but it is behind the glove box and easily owner-replaceable, which is why it’s a popular DIY. Nothing needs to be unbolted.
Which way does the filter face?
Match the airflow arrow on the filter frame to the direction marked in the housing (it points toward the blower). Fitting it backwards restricts airflow.
How often should I change it?
Roughly once a year or every 12,000-15,000 miles, and sooner if you drive in dusty or high-pollen areas or notice weak airflow or a musty smell from the vents.
The filter is the same across the 2019-onward DT 1500; the older 2009-2018 (DS) truck uses a different filter and location.
