Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

These instructions apply to the Renault Megane Mk4 (XFB) 2016-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Renault Megane (Mk4, 2016–2022) uses an electronic parking brake (EPB) on most trims, with the release switch on the centre console behind the gear lever. Before you can change the rear pads or discs, the calipers have to be put into service mode so the motors wind the parking-brake pistons fully clear of the disc. The Megane Mk4 has a genuine owner-operated service-mode sequence built into the car — you do not always need a CLIP diagnostic tool, although a locked phase-2 ECU may refuse the manual entry (see the warning below).

Note that base and lower trims of the Megane Mk4 came with a conventional cable handbrake lever. If your car has a pull-up lever between the seats rather than a small rocker switch on the console, this procedure does not apply — you simply leave the lever down and wind the pistons in mechanically.

Putting the EPB into service mode

Service mode tells the parking-brake motors to retract fully and stay retracted, giving you the clearance to compress the piston and fit thicker new pads. Do this with the car safely chocked, but before you jack it up or remove a wheel.

  1. Switch the ignition on without starting the engine: press Start/Stop once without touching either pedal.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal and wait about one second.
  3. Still holding the brake pedal, also press and hold the accelerator pedal for at least one second.
  4. With both pedals held down, press the EPB switch — the red parking-brake warning light will start to flash.
  5. Within five seconds, while the red light is still flashing, press the EPB switch once more. The rear calipers wind fully open and the car is now in service mode.

If nothing happens or the light goes solid instead of flashing, the sequence has timed out — switch off, wait, and start again from step one. Some later phase-2 Meganes have a locked ABS/EPB module that ignores the manual sequence; on those cars the calipers can only be retracted with a Renault CLIP (or compatible) diagnostic tool. If three clean attempts fail, assume your car is one of these and use a tool rather than forcing anything.

Critical warning — never force the pistons back

On an EPB caliper the piston is driven by a motor and a fine internal screw. Never wind or push the rear pistons back by hand, and never compress them with a G-clamp. Forcing the piston the wrong way strips the spindle or burns out the motor, and a replacement EPB caliper is far more expensive than a set of pads. The piston must be retracted electronically by service mode (or, once open, wound back with the correct triangular three-pin Renault tool that turns the spindle with the motor) — not muscled in.

Exiting service mode and bedding in

When the new pads and discs are fitted and both wheels are back on, exit service mode in the same order but pull the EPB switch instead of pressing it: ignition on, hold the brake pedal, hold the accelerator, pull the EPB switch, then pull it again within five seconds. The motors clamp the calipers back onto the discs. Cycle the switch on and off a couple of times and confirm the red warning light behaves normally and no EPB fault message remains on the dash.

Finally, bed the new pads in: with the EPB working normally, drive gently and make ten to fifteen moderate stops from around 30–40 mph, leaving a gap between each so the brakes cool. Avoid hard or prolonged braking for the first 200 miles so the friction material transfers an even layer onto the discs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my Megane Mk4 has the electronic parking brake?
Look between the seats. A small rocker switch with a (P) symbol on the centre console means EPB; a pull-up lever means a cable handbrake and this procedure is not needed.

Can I retract the Megane EPB without a diagnostic tool?
Usually yes — the pedal-and-switch sequence above is built into the car. But some locked phase-2 modules refuse it, in which case a Renault CLIP tool is the only way.

What happens if I push the piston back by hand?
You risk stripping the motor spindle and writing off the caliper. Always retract electronically and only wind the spindle with the correct three-pin tool once service mode is active.

Do both rear calipers retract together?
Yes. Service mode releases both rear motors at once, so there is no need to repeat the sequence per side.

Why is there a parking-brake fault light after the job?
Usually because you exited service mode incorrectly or a caliper was not fully clamped. Re-run the exit sequence; if the warning stays, have the fault read.

If a brake or EPB warning light or fault code appears afterwards, you can look up what it means at autodtcs.com.
