The Renault Megane Mk4 (2016–2022) has a Stop & Start system that switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel and reduce emissions. When you come to a halt with the car ready to move off again, the engine cuts, then fires straight back up as you dip the clutch or lift off the brake. The engine stopping like this is normal — it is not a warning of a fault. If you’d rather keep it running — in traffic, on a hot day, or before working in the engine bay — you switch it off with one button.
How It Works on the Megane
Stop & Start on the Megane Mk4 relies on the 12 V battery and a heavy-duty starter to bring the engine back quickly and quietly. The control unit only allows an auto-stop once a set of conditions are met — a warm engine, enough battery charge, and no big demand from the heating or cooling. Whenever those conditions aren’t satisfied, the engine simply keeps idling. That is deliberate, so the same car can feel very different from one journey to the next depending on the weather and how far you’ve driven.

If the Engine Won’t Auto-Stop (or Won’t Stay Off)
If Stop & Start keeps the engine idling at every halt even though you haven’t switched it off, it’s usually one of these inhibit conditions rather than a fault:
- Tired 12 V battery — the most common reason. The Megane won’t auto-stop unless there’s enough charge for a clean restart, so a weak battery quietly disables the feature.
- Cold engine — the engine must reach normal temperature before it will cut, so it rarely stops in the first few minutes.
- Heating or cooling demand — a hot or cold cabin, or the demister running, holds the engine on to keep you comfortable.
- On a slope — the system may skip the stop when it senses a gradient.
- Belt, door or steering — an unbuckled seatbelt, an open door or turning the wheel can each inhibit an auto-stop.
- Ignition was cycled — the button resets to ‘on’ every restart, so if it’s stopping again you may simply need to press it once more.
After the Reset
Once the off indicator shows, the Megane keeps the engine running for the rest of that journey — you can sit at lights without it cutting out. Switch the car off and on and Stop & Start re-arms itself automatically, with the indicator clearing. Nothing is saved and nothing needs re-coding, so you can toggle it as often as you like with no lasting effect.
