Use the EDC Emergency Park Release

These instructions apply to the Renault Megane Mk4 (XFB) 2016-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

If your EDC dual-clutch automatic Renault Megane Mk4 (2016–2022) won’t come out of P — typically with a flat battery or a shift-interlock fault — there’s a built-in emergency release so you can move the car. It’s a cabin-only override; no high-voltage or under-car work is involved.

Before You Start

Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels first. Releasing the lock lets the car roll, so secure it before you touch anything.

How to Release the Lever from P

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Remove the cover around the gear lever — carefully unclip the trim beside the selector.
  3. Depress the brake pedal and, at the same time, insert a flat screwdriver and press the release button in the opening.
  4. Move the gear lever to ‘N’ (neutral).
  5. Refit the cover.

Renault advise having the car checked afterwards — this is an emergency move, not a repair.

Then What?

This only gets you mobile — for example to roll off a driveway or onto a recovery truck. If the lever wouldn’t release because the battery is flat, sort the battery; if it happens with a healthy battery, have the shift interlock checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Megane EDC is stuck in Park — how do I move it?

Set the parking brake, unclip the lever cover, press the brake and the release button (with a screwdriver) together, and move the lever to N.

Is this safe to do myself?

Yes — it’s a cabin override with no electrical risk. Secure the car first, as it can roll once released.

Why did the lever lock in P?

Usually a flat 12 V battery (no power to the interlock) or an interlock fault.

Do I need a tool?

A small flat screwdriver to lift the cover and press the release.

If the lever locked because of a dead battery, see our Megane battery guide. For a stored fault code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
