Set the Wiper Service Position

To change the wiper blades or lift them off the glass in winter on a Skoda Fabia Mk4 (PJ, 2021–present), the wiper arms need to be in their service position — standing up clear of the bonnet edge. If you just switch the ignition off, the arms park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them. Here’s how to raise them.

The service position — also called the maintenance or winter position — sweeps the wiper arms up to vertical and holds them there so you can work on the blades. It’s the mode to use when you renew the blades, stand the arms off the glass in frost so the rubber doesn’t freeze to the screen and tear as you pull away, or clear leaves and snow out of the scuttle channel at the base of the windscreen. Why You Need the Service Position

The Fabia’s wipers park tucked below the bonnet trim, with the arms partly under the rear edge of the bonnet. That keeps them out of the airflow and looks neat, but it leaves no room to hinge the arms up by hand. Try to lift them from rest and the arm presses against the bonnet or its trim, which risks bending the arm, cracking the plastic, or chipping the paint. The dedicated mode moves the arms upright first so they clear the bonnet and swing away freely.

Getting Ready

• Close the bonnet fully — the car won’t enter the mode with it open, and it also keeps the arms from fouling anything as they rise.
• Be ready at the stalk. The input only works for a few seconds after you switch off, so know where the stalk is before you begin.
• Free any frozen blades first. If the rubber is iced to the glass, lift it gently by hand or the motor can stall trying to move it.
• Have the new blades to hand so the arms don’t stand on the bare screen longer than needed.
• Work one arm at a time and keep fingers clear of the linkage while the wipers travel.

How to Set the Wiper Service Position

1. Make sure the bonnet is closed (the car won’t enter the mode with it open).
2. Turn the ignition on then off — switch the ignition off.
3. Within about 10 seconds of switching off, briefly push the wiper stalk down (the wipe-once / flick position).
4. The wipers sweep up and stop in the vertical service position.
5. Lift the arms away from the glass to change the blades or clear snow.

Returning Them to Park

Once you’ve fitted the new blades or cleared the screen, fold the arms back onto the glass so they lie flat. Then switch the ignition on and operate the wipers once — they sweep back down to the normal parked position under the bonnet trim. Give them a single wipe to confirm they’re seated and sweeping cleanly before you set off.

If the Wipers Won’t Lift

• You missed the time window — the stalk input only works for a few seconds after switching the ignition off; switch off and try again promptly.
• Wrong ignition state — the car needs to have just been switched off; if it’s still fully awake the flick is ignored.
• The bonnet isn’t fully latched — the mode is blocked with the bonnet open, so close it firmly.
• Blades frozen — free them gently first, or the motor may stall against the ice.
• Wipers weren’t parked — let a wipe finish so the arms are at rest before switching off.
• Nothing happened — repeat the on-off-then-flick sequence; a mistimed attempt just means starting over.

Changing the Blades / What to Expect

With the arms standing vertical, support the arm as you release the old blade so it can’t spring back onto the glass — a bare metal hook dropping onto the screen can crack it. Most blades here use a common clip or hook fitting that unclips with light thumb pressure; slide the old blade off, click the new one home, then lower the arm gently back to the glass. Tug each blade lightly to confirm it’s locked before you cycle the wipers.
