Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Subaru Legacy Mk6 (BN) 2014-2019. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Subaru Legacy (2014–2019) — the BN B4 — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags is a straightforward job. The battery is in the engine bay.

Find the Battery First

The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover. Note your radio presets before you start.

Disconnecting Safely

  1. Switch everything off.
  2. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
  3. Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait a couple of minutes after disconnecting before such work.

Reconnecting and Re-initialising

Reconnect positive first, then negative. The Legacy then needs a few items settling:

  • Power windows — if one-touch is lost, hold the switch fully up/down at the limits to relearn.
  • Steering-angle / EyeSight assistance settle after a short drive on a clear road.
  • Re-enter the clock and presets.

If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards

  • Warning lights usually clear once the relearns complete after a short drive.
  • A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
  • Fit a like-for-like battery of the correct spec.
