Home/Subaru/XV/Mk1 (GP) 2012-2017/Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Replace the Cabin Air Filter

These instructions apply to the Subaru XV Mk1 (GP) 2012-2017.

Weak airflow from the vents, or a windscreen that fogs up easily, usually means a clogged cabin (pollen) filter on the first-generation Subaru XV (GP, 2012–2017). It sits behind the glove box and is a 10-minute job with no tools — Subaru schedules it every 12 months or 12,000 km, sooner in dusty conditions.

How to replace the Subaru XV cabin air filter

  1. Open the glove box fully.
  2. Detach the small damper (strut) arm from the side of the glove box so it can swing down further.
  3. Push in the stoppers on both sides of the glove box and lower it all the way down.
  4. Slide the old filter out of its housing behind the glove box.
  5. Fit the new filter with the arrow mark pointing up (it shows the airflow direction) — fitting it the wrong way reduces airflow.
  6. Raise the glove box back into place, re-engage the stoppers and reconnect the damper arm.

Use a genuine-type filter kit sized for the XV. If airflow is still poor or the glass keeps misting afterwards, have the system checked rather than leaving a blocked filter in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the cabin filter on a Subaru XV (GP)?

Behind the glove box. Lower the glove box fully by detaching its damper and pressing the side stoppers, and the filter slides out of its housing.

How often should the cabin filter be changed?

Subaru specifies every 12 months or 12,000 km (7,500 miles), whichever comes first — more often if you drive in dusty or pollen-heavy conditions.

Which way does the filter go in?

With the arrow printed on its frame pointing up, in the direction of airflow. Fitting it upside down restricts the air through the vents.

If a blocked filter comes with a climate or blower-motor warning, read the stored code on autodtcs.com.
