Release the Gear Selector from Park (Automatic)

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 1, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Subaru XV Mk1 (GP) 2012-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your automatic (Lineartronic CVT) first-generation Subaru XV (GP, 2012–2017) won’t come out of Park — typically because the 12-volt battery is flat and the brake-shift interlock has no power — there is a manual shift-lock release beside the selector. Manual-gearbox XVs don’t have this and aren’t affected.

First, try the normal interlock

With the ignition switched to ON and your foot firmly on the brake, press the button on the selector and move it out of Park. The lever only moves from P with the ignition on and the brake pressed, so check both before going further.

How to use the shift-lock release

  1. Apply the parking brake and switch the engine off.
  2. Wrap the tip of a flat-blade screwdriver in tape or a cloth and gently prise off the shift-lock cover next to the selector lever.
  3. Press and hold the shift-lock release button underneath the cover.
  4. With the brake pedal pressed, move the selector out of Park.
  5. Refit the cover once the car can be moved.

Needing the manual release usually means the 12-volt battery is flat — jump-start or charge it. If the battery is fine and the lever still won’t move, have the shift-lock system checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my automatic XV shift out of Park?

The brake-shift interlock needs power and a pressed brake pedal. A flat 12-volt battery is the usual cause; it can also be a blown stop-lamp fuse or a fault in the interlock.

Where is the shift-lock release on a Subaru XV?

Under a small cover next to the selector lever. Prise the cover off with a taped screwdriver and press the button beneath it while holding the brake.

Does my manual XV have a shift lock?

No. The shift lock and this release are only on the CVT automatic. A manual car has no interlock on the gear lever.

If a dead battery caused this, see our jump-start guide; decode any related code on autodtcs.com.
